Put Some
Bass On
Your Desktop!

Here are the categories of pictures:

Bass Art -- the term "art" is used loosely here, but these are the more artsy/wacky creations.
Instruments -- Shots of bass beauties, including interesting close-ups.
Gear -- Anything bass gear, and maybe even some things not.

Have fun with the files below and let me know if you have any suggestions or requests (or contributions!). I will add pics to this page as I can, as I know the selection is limited right now. I've worked to make each image as high quality as possible -- enjoy.

Technical Notes

PC vs. Mac

There are two basic issues with PC vs. Mac for desktop images:

Gamma correction: because PCs are not often set to correct for the inherent darkening of midtones by computer monitors while the Mac automatically does (read more), these pictures have been treated differently for each platform. Web graphics are usually a compromise between the two, but here we have the luxury of being platform specific for optimum results.

File format: the files here are all JPEGs (with low compression for best quality), with the only difference between PC & Mac files being the darkness as explained above. To use JPEGs on the Windows desktop, you can right click on the image in Internet Explorer and select "use as wallpaper"; or, there are lots of shareware programs available to accomplish this (some links to start with: 1, 2, & 3). Because bitmaps (BMPs) are roughly four times the file size of JPEGs, it just doesn't make sense to use them here; get the shareware, and save disk space and download time.

Resolution

The high resolution images are for monitors set to 1024x768 pixels, while the medium resolutions are 832x624 (Mac) and 800x600 (PC). Determine what your display resolution is set to, and then select the corresponding files.

Bass Art

Earth Bass: An original bass art idea that I've had for some time. I always thought it would be cool to have a real bass with the "earth fingerboard". (A poster of this one is in the works -- stay tuned.)

Goth Bass: Sure, this poor painting has been parodied to death, but I couldn't resist bringing a hint of a smile to the old man's face by handing him a P-bass.

Sadowsky Holiday Postcard 1998: Sadowsky Vintage 5 and P-J basses (& Electric Nylon Guitar) added to a "yesteryears" stock photograph [view original photo]. This one made it on Steely Dan's home page -- check it out.

Liberty Bass: Also a Sadowsky holiday postcard (2000), and available as a poster.
